portraits of the natural world — cover and spread

Portraits of the Natural World

The book consists of 66 full page pictures of my paintings. On the page opposite each picture is a page containing enlargements of portions of the paintings which reveal the knife technique and brief descriptions of my relationship to the subject as well as some interesting facts about the subject. Included in the 150 pages are my thoughts on painting natural settings and techniques of painting with knives. The main aim of my art is to celebrate the flora. All of us are aware of the immeasurable value of the products of plants, from food and medicine to furniture, but my art celebrates an aspect of the flora that owes nothing to the industry of humanity. I want to celebrate an oak tree for what it has become through its long evolution, not for what we make of it. These features of context and form tell a story of the place of each plant in the world. Scientists call it the natural history of the species.
